Reconstruction of the Denklingen railway bridge
Currently it is our most ambitious project: the reconstruction of the listed Denklingen railway bridge - pictured above.
The Denklingen railway bridge is unusual in two ways: One half is a concrete span - made from mass concrete. Bridges have been built using this technique only for a short period of time, as it soon was replaced by the reinforced concrete construction method. The other half is a temporary bridge. In 1945 the German Wehrmacht blasted a gap in the Wiehltalbahn line. The temporary bridge that had been installed back then has now existed longer than the original concrete span.
Both parts of the bridge need to be restored: the concrete span has to be sealed to prevent water penetration and the steel part has to be refurbished dramatically.
In the course of thousands of hours of voluntary work we have sealed the concrete span. Technically and financially the project was supported by the "Landschaftsverband Rheinland - Amt für Denkmalpflege im Rheinland (Regional Authority Rhineland - department for preservation of monuments)" - and the District Council of Cologne as a subordinated authority for monument protection.
At the same time the following works on the steel part were scheduled for scientific investigation.
On these pages we will inform you about the basis and the progress of the works. Furthermore you can follow the progress of the works in a photo gallery.
